“B” team middle four found wanting in 34 shot loss at R.N.A.
The Vics afternoon “B” team lost by 31 shots to R.N.A. on their tricky little green at Birkenhead yesterday but in a role reversal of the “A” teams fortunes, it was the Vics middle four that could not build on a promising start by the front four blocks, actually dropping 34 shots to their opponents. The Vics found themselves basking in the sunshine with a narrow 4 shot lead after the first four, with Dave Bosworth 21-20 and C.K.Pau 21-16, continuing their unbeaten starts to the season with fine displays on the slopes of Birkenhead Park. Dave Bosworth, seems to be bowling better than ever this season, combining away victories with his normal tremendous home form. C.K. Pau won the sweep for the third time in succession but will still be unhappy to have let a 14-02 lead slip away to 14-14 before re-asserting his superiority once again. Bill Purcell and Ernie Peers produced fighting displays before both losing out 20-21 after long and hard fought games. Unfortunately for the Vics, this was the high point of the match with the low point arriving quickly with four losses out of four in the middle and the lead being lost to in fact see the Vics last two on the green once again having to pull back a 30 shot loss. This was reminiscent of the first away match against Marine Park but this time Derek Thomas 18-21 and Keith Etches 21-19 could only manage to limit the defeat to an overall 31 shots. Keith actually put himself top of the averages with his third successive League win and showed the rest of the squad the merits of just playing the green as you see it and not worrying about a bad bounce here or a big slide off a slope there. The Vics squad is, I believe, capable of finishing at the top of this League but need to stiffen up in away matches as no matter how many big home wins we get, it is away from home that this League will be won.
